Baby Massage

Melbourne Doula - Stephanie NorquayMassaging your baby is a wonderful way for you to communicate and share time together. It is also a unique opportunity for you to learn more about your child and to gain confidence in your parenting.

I attained my qualifications as a remedial massage therapist in 1995 with a long term aspiration of focusing these skills on baby massage and promoting the bond between mother, father and child through touch.

I am available to run baby massage classes in Melbourne over a series of private sessions or in a group format. Some of the potential benefits you can expect to gain from these sessions are listed below…

  • Learn new techniques for calming and settling your baby.
  • Help strengthen your baby’s immune system, increasing their resistance to illness.
  • Deepen your awareness of your baby’s body language and behavioural states.
  • Stimulate prolactin production which supports and improves lactation.
  • Reduce levels of stress hormones in both baby and parent.
  • Help decrease risk of developing Postnatal Depression.
  • Enrich your bond with one another.
Over the duration of the course you will learn all the appropriate strokes to give your baby a whole body massage; a colic routine to aid in digestion and settling; some gentle stretching exercises for your baby to help integrate mind/body awareness, co-ordination, and form connections; and also how to pick up on your baby’s cues, so you can make the most of your time together.

Private Classes

Melbourne Doula - Stephanie Norquay
3 x 1.5 hour baby massage sessions run over 3 consecutive weeks in the comfort and convenience of your own home.

(Includes a bottle of organic massage oil, a massage sequence handout and a folder of relevant resources)

The benefit of private infant massage sessions is that they have the flexibility to be extra sensitive to the needs of you and your baby, so you are able to move at your own pace, and can be arranged at a time that suits you best. These sessions also offer a great chance for parents to learn the strokes together and spend some focused time as a family.

Group Classes

Melbourne Doula - Stephanie Norquay
3 x 1-1.5 hour baby massage sessions run over 3 consecutive weeks.

(Includes a bottle of organic massage oil, a massage sequence handout and a folder of relevant resources)

If you would like to gather some of your friends/mother’s group together and host baby massage sessions in your own home, I will travel to you at a time that suits you and your group best.

You will enjoy learning with other mums/parents and sharing each others experiences; benefiting from the mutual support that a group class provides and the opportunity to continue meeting together and motivating each other.

“It is through our hands that we speak to the child… that we communicate…

Touch is the child’s first language. Understanding comes long after feeling.”

– Frederick Leboyer

*Frederick Leboyer (born November 1, 1918) is a French obstetrician and author. He is best known for his 1975 book, Birth Without Violence, which popularised gentle birthing techniques, in particular, the practice of immersing newly-born infants in a small tub of warm water to help ease the transition from the womb to the outside world.
